Clinical Research Coordinator Training

Clinical Research Coordinator Training is an intensive training program designed to meet the needs of coordinators who have less than one year of experience or who have never received formal training. It is useful to anyone who requires a fast, thorough introduction to clinical research trial conduct, Good Clinical Practice and the federal regulations governing research. The class is geared toward providing practical information to get students "up and running" in the clinic, with many tools and templates to assist with study implementation.

It is available as a two-day in-person program or a five-session, scheduled online program.  Details and schedules for both the in-person and online program are listed below.  Click on the arrow to the left of either CRC Training Online or CRC Training Live to see schedule options as well as cancellation and transfer policies.  PLEASE NOTE: In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, in-person training is currently postponed.

COURSE TOPICS INCLUDE: Informed consent, clinical trial initiation, FDA forms and procedures, regulatory documents and binder maintenance, source documents, study initiation and close-out visits, compliance and retention, drug compliance/storage/documentation, IRB submissions and HIPAA, adverse events and safety monitoring, quality assurance audits and monitor visits and preparing for FDA audits.

To register with a Northwestern University chart string a discount code is not needed; please follow the steps as outlined below:

  1. Contact nucats-ed@northwestern.edu to make sure there are enough registration openings for the live or online course of your choice.
  2. If yes, then process an Internal Sales Journal (ISJ) for the course fee ($99 for an NU employee, Chicagoland CTSA employee, or an NU affiliate employee) per registrant for the class to chart string # (Fund) 110- (Dept) 5434000- (Account) 50699. Include the following information in the ISJ notes: Name(s) of person(s) taking the course, name of course or event and date of course or event.
  3. At the same time that the ISJ is submitted, please have each participant create an account in our registration system Digital Chalk.  If a digital chalk account is not created when ISJ is approved, we are not able to hold a spot in class as it is a first come, first served basis.
  4. Please allow for up to five business days for chart string payments and approvals to be completed. Once our Finance Department confirms approval of the ISJ, you will be registered for the course and you will receive a confirmation via email from Digital Chalk. If the ISJ was approved and you haven't received a confirmation email regarding the class, please contact nucats-ed@northwestern.edu immediately.

You will not be a confirmed registrant for the course until all of the above steps have been completed in full. NUCATS will make every effort to ensure you can attend on your preferred course date but is unable to guarantee a spot in any course until the course is confirmed via email from the Digital Chalk system.

This course includes approximately 20 hours of pre-session reading and assignments that must be completed prior to your first day of class. The pre-session reading and questions are essential to the design of the course as not all basic definitions and principles will be reviewed in detail during the five sessions. We highly encourage the purchase of the course book (The CRC's Guide to Coordinating Clinical Research by author Karen E. Woodin, PhD, and editor Sara Gambrill), which will allow you to complete the reading and assignments as designed. You may also complete the pre-session assignment by utilizing external resources if you wish. The pre-session assignments (pre-work packet) can be downloaded from NUCATS Online after you have registered for the course.
