Clinical Research Ethics Consultation

Recognizing the importance of ethical research conduct and the centrality of the principle of justice in research ethics, NUCATS maintains a dedicated Clinical Research Ethics Consultation (CREC) service. Co-directed by Seema Shah, JD, and Irene Blanco, MD, the CREC provides advice and concrete recommendations about ethical issues to those involved in research.

This CREC service offers critical support to research teams, institutional review boards (IRBs) and even research participants at all stages of research planning, implementation, and reporting to address challenging ethical-related issues.

The goal of CREC is to anticipate and address potential issues. Examples include:

  1. Whether paying participants at lower-income sites more than participants in higher-income neighborhoods can be ethically justified
  2. What post-trial obligations might arise toward participants and communities after a study is over
  3. Whether it is ethical to randomize participants to receive a placebo in a clinical trial

This critical support to research teams, available at any point in the research lifecycle, will help them better address challenging ethical issues as they arise.
