Welcome to the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute

From Director, Philip Greenland

Great advances in knowledge about the basic biology of human life are happening now. The next exciting wave of significant research will be dedicated to moving or “translating” this knowledge into effective new preventive approaches, diagnostics, treatments and cures for human diseases.

With the launch of the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences (NUCATS) Institute, we are positioned to actively participate and make a difference in furthering these life-changing research ends.

NUCATS, an initiative of Northwestern University and its clinical affiliates (Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, Children’s Memorial Hospital, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and Evanston Northwestern Healthcare) capitalizes on the strength of our shared resources. Our vision is to become a major research catalyzing center—facilitating  growth of translational and clinical research across the entire NU enterprise.

The Institute is comprised of a number of distinct but highly interactive units that work together to transform how translational research is performed at Northwestern. These units cover all aspects of biomedical research including clinical trials, community engagement, biomedical informatics, regulatory support, core resources and pilot programs to promote both cutting-edge research and the development of radical new technologies.

NUCATS is a series of partnerships of basic and clinical scientists, academic clinicians and community clinic members, clinical researchers and participants in clinical trials, biomedical industry professionals, engineers and physicians and many others. When it is fully operational, NUCATS will become the “place to go” for researchers looking for collaborations, research groups looking for pilot funds to support promising early stage translational research, and for community members interested in clinical trials and learning about the latest biomedical advances.

A remarkable venture, NUCATS encompasses six Northwestern schools and five clinical affiliates, and engages a range of people from the CEOs of our hospital affiliates to first-year graduate students.  Please take a few minutes to learn more about us. Feel free to review our evolving Web site and contact us with any questions, comments or suggestions.
