Request for Applications: American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant

Sept 25, 2007

The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center is soliciting cancer-related research proposals from junior faculty who are within 6 years of their first independent faculty appointment, and who do not presently have a national research grant  (K award recipients are eligible). Proposals will be funded by an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant awarded to the Cancer Center in October, 2005. The intent of this ACS grant is to allow junior faculty to generate preliminary data which can be used to attract national funding for cancer-relevant research.

The Cancer Center will fund four proposals this year.  Three awards will support cancer-relevant projects in any of the following categories:  basic/preclinical research, clinical research, or population research.  The fourth award will fund a cancer-relevant project in one of the following categories: 1) psychosocial and behavioral research, 2) health policy or services research, 3) cancer in poor and/or underserved populations, or 4) childhood cancers. Projects will be funded for one year at up to $20,000.   Previous recipients of ACS-IRG awards are not eligible to apply for a second year of funding.

Using Ariel 11 font throughout, please use the attached form to prepare the application.   Full information regarding other support is very important. In the research description, which should be limited to 5 pages, please include an abstract, background, preliminary data (not required, include if available), research design and methods, relevance to cancer, and possible future directions. Where applicable, include a plan for data analysis.  Do not include any important information in an appendix, as appendices may not be distributed to reviewers.  In the budget, please do not request permanent equipment costing more than $2K or salary support for yourself.  You may request salary support for technicians, postdoctoral fellows, etc.  Please note that these awards are restricted to U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or permanent residents.

Non-tenure track faculty are eligible to submit applications, provided that they have their own research space, an independent research program, and future plans to apply for national funding.  A letter from the head of the research group with which these applicants are associated, affirming that these provisions are met, must accompany the application.

Applications must be submitted electronically to Benette Phillips, by Monday, November 12.   These applications will be reviewed by an internal IRG committee, and grant recipients will be notified in late December or early January. We strongly recommend that requests for IRB/ACUC approval be initiated at the time of application. Although approval information is not required in the application, funds cannot be made available until such approval is obtained.
