PSTP Training in Psychiatry

The PSTP experience in psychiatry is designed to foster the development of psychiatric residents into academic careers as clinician-investigators.  This pathway is designed for the M.D., Ph.D. or M.D. graduate who has a strong interest in research and an academic career.  This residency track will allow the resident to complete the requirements for certification with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology while providing generous time for intensive research under the tutelage of faculty mentors.  Upon joining the program, the PSTP Scholar is linked with a Career Mentor who advises him/her on decisions involving the program structure, choice of a Research Mentor, and planning for long term career issues.  The PSTP Scholar can choose the ideal research environment for his/her career development at any time during the first two years of residency training, and he/she can work with any research program within Northwestern University.

For information on the General Psychiatry Training Program, click here.  In general, the first eighteen months of psychiatry training involve intensive clinical training, but there are still several hours per week that can be devoted to research interests.  In the third and fourth years, from 30 to 80% of the PSTP Scholar’s time can be devoted to research activities.

Financial Support

During residency training, the PSTP Scholar is supported with supplemental funds for books, journals, and travel for scientific presentations.  National presentations are highly encouraged and supported with active mentorship. Additional support is available for some laboratory expenses.
