Multidisciplinary Clinical and Translational Scientists (MCTS) Scholar Grant Competition

Preliminary Proposals due June 1, 2009 for consideration

GOALS

This MCTS Scholars Program is designed to support the early research career development of junior faculty who will be engaged in clinical and translational research. Senior fellows who will have a faculty appointment before receiving the award are also eligible. This award provides salary support and additional resources to ensure protected time for mentored research and didactic training in clinical research.

OVERVIEW

The KL2 scholarships will be awarded for two years with the second year contingent upon adequate progress during the first year. Therefore, we are requesting applications for training periods of two years. The two-year training must include both mentored research and plans for other research career development activities. Individuals who are funded by this mechanism will receive assistance in applying for other research career development awards or other independent grants during the period of this award. A third year of funding may be available at the end of two years for those who have submitted an individual mentored (i.e., K23) or independent grant proposal (i.e., R21, R03 or R01) that is competitive but not yet funded.

The purpose of this MCTS Scholar KL2 Program is to support an institutional career development program for investigators to develop the skills to become independent patient-oriented clinical investigators. The goal of the program is to train the next generation of clinical and translational researchers who will be capable of working effectively within multidisciplinary clinical research teams. The institutional program includes activities that will provide candidates a comprehensive understanding of clinical research approaches that are fundamental and not necessarily disease-specific. Under this award, junior investigators will be selected to participate in an integrated didactic and mentored research program that will be overseen by the KL2 Program Advisory Committee. The committee includes patient-oriented scientists and is chaired by Dr. Richard Pope.

The purpose of this communication is to invite initial MCTS Scholar applications from interested and motivated eligible candidates. The due date for preliminary proposals is June 1, 2009. Finalists will be invited to submit full applications. Full applications will be due August 10, 2009. Funding is to begin in early fall 2009.
