2009

Using an Ambulatory Electronic Health Record (EHR) as an Outreach Tool to Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates for a Low Income Patient Population (Bechara Choucair MD, Heartland Health Initiative, John Gatta PhD, Elizabeth Ryan EdD, Department of Family Medicine and Muriel Jean Jacques MD, Department of General Internal Medicine, Northwestern). This project will develop, pilot and evaluate an electronic health record (EHR) based outreach intervention to increase patient adherence to national screening guidelines for colorectal cancer. 

Clinician-driven optimization of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to promote adherence to guidelines for the identification and care of overweight and obese children (Drs. Sara Naureckas and Sue Haverkamp, Erie Family Health and Adolfo Ariza MD, Children’s Memorial Hospital).  This project will obtain input of Erie pediatricians to design new screens in the electronic health record to prompt for obesity treatment in children.  

Parent Influences on Eating Behaviors in Early Childhood (Kelly Lowry, PhD, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Children’s Memorial Hospital and Dr. David Dobkin, Dr. Tim Geleske and Sue Beatty RN of North Arlington Pediatrics). This project will assess parent feeding stragies and other known contributors to child weight status to determine the relationship between parenting and weight gain in early childhood.

2008

Doctor Communication and Parent Understanding (Barbara Bayldon, MD, Mariana Glusman MD, Uptown Community Health, Helen Binns MD MPH and Adolfo Ariza MD, Children’s Memorial Research Center).  This project will study physician communication and the frequency and attributes of parent misunderstanding of medication prescriptions and disease management advice. We will also look at the extent to which parents'literacy level affects their understanding of and adherence to medical advise.

Understanding Children’s Stomach Pain (Miguel Saps MD and David Dobkin MD of North Arlington Pediatrics).   This study will pilot a method to evaluate prevalence and precursors to functional gastrointestinal disorders in primary care clinics. This study will prospectively enroll 200 parents in waiting rooms assess child health by survey and phone interview. Samples of parents will be re-interviewed 3 and 6 months later. The results of this study will guide the development of a more extensive study.
