Clinical Research Unit Core Resources

Overview

The Northwestern University CRU offers several core resource facilities. These primary core resources are available as direct support to approved investigator-initiated, peer-reviewed studies carried out at the CRU.

There are currently units at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) and at Children’s Memorial Hospital (CMH).

NMH

At NMH, the discrete unit features six inpatient beds and a 1,334 square foot outpatient facility with five outpatient rooms. The facility's environment can be adapted for specific study requirements, such as sleep studies or bone marrow transplant. The main core laboratory and research dietary core are also located at NMH and provide a range of services for both NMH and CMH studies. CRU research nurses are specialists trained for research procedures, including, but not limited to, pharmacokinetic studies, circadian studies, oral glucose tolerance tests, tilt table research, continuous pulse and blood pressure monitoring, EKGs, pituitary hormone testing, central line access and site care, CADD pump infusion, chemotherapy administration, monoclonal antibody administration, and adverse event management.

CMH

At CMH, the discrete unit features two beds and two procedure chairs in three outpatient rooms.  The facility’s environment is well-suited for children and families with many age-appropriate activities to distract and entertain children while participating in studies. The CRU research nurses are specialists trained in research procedures, including, but not limited to, pharmacokinetic studies, oral glucose tolerance tests, continuous pulse and blood pressure monitoring, EKGs, infusions, spirometry and adverse event management.
