Laboratory Specimen Submission

Procedure for submission of sample for specimen processing when the CRU Core Lab is closed:

If the Inpatient unit at the CRU is open:

1. Notify the nursing staff on duty about expected date and time of sample submission by calling 312.926.5503.

2. Hand-deliver sample to nursing staff, or send sample via tube system #601 located at 10SE Nurse’s station.

3. The nursing staff at 10SE usually alerts CRU staff about sample arrival at the tube station.

4. CRU nurse periodically checks for sample arrival at the tube station.

If the Inpatient unit at the CRU is closed:

1. Send sample via tube system #601 located at 10SE Nurses station, or hand deliver sample to 10SE Nurse’s station.

2. For hand delivered samples, notify the CRU personnel on-call about the specimen submission. The name and telephone numbers are listed in the on-call notification sheet posted on the Core Lab door, the inpatient nurse’s station door, and at the tube station #601.

3. For samples submitted through the tube system, the nursing staff at 10SE calls in the person on-call upon receipt of sample at the tube station.
